Minneapolis, Portland And San Francisco Top Walk Score Ranking Of Most Bikeable Cities ›

stuffaboutminneapolis:

The only site that makes it easy for apartment renters and homebuyers to find neighborhoods where they can drive less and live more, announced today the long anticipated launch of Bike Score(TM). Bike Score is the only quantitative measure of the bikeability of a location based on the availability of bike lanes, hilliness, road connectivity, nearby amenities, and the percent of people in that area who bike to work.

“Bicycling saves money on gas and fosters better health and a cleaner environment. But the best part about it is not being trapped in traffic. Biking can turn your commute into the best part of your day,” said Josh Herst, CEO, Walk Score. “Across the country, biking is growing in popularity and we’re excited to celebrate Bike to Work Week by introducing Bike Score to help more people find bicycle friendly places to live.”

Here’s the first thing you’ll want to know about Shaun Murphy, Minneapolis’s new bicycle and pedestrian coordinator: He rides a shitty bike. The chain and chainrings are rusted,  the seat’s duct taped and the brakes squeak so loudly they’ll make you jump the first time you hear them.

Why, you ask, is that the first thing you’ll want to know about this man? Because along with that crappy bike comes a refreshing lack of the pretentiousness you might expect from someone in his position (Murphy is the city’s new bicycle-pedestrian coordinator). What you get instead is a guy who likes riding his bike and who wants to make the streets safer for those like him. In fact, Murphy wants to make the streets safer for everyone—whether they’re on foot, on two wheels or behind a steering wheel.

After spending time in Denmark I am convinced that this is what cycling needs. We gotta make it less of a niche sport and open it up to anyone and everyone.
